Campgrounds near the
San Gorgonio Wilderness
Developed Campgrounds
Developed
camping is camping at 'family' campgrounds and group campgrounds that have services and
facilities. There are no developed campgrounds inside the San Gorgonio Wilderness.
Family campgrounds are generally equipped with vault or
flush toilets, fire rings, and/or stoves, tables, and parking spaces. Water is available
as noted in the table below. The National Recreation
Reservation Service (877-444-6777 toll-free) handles
reservations for most family campgrounds. There is a fee for this service. More than half
of the sites in each campground are available for reservation. The remainder are on a
first come-first served basis.
Staying at a developed campground prior to entering the
Wilderness has the advantage of allowing the visitor to become acclimatized to the
elevation and allowing the visitor quick and easy access to a Wilderness trailhead without
a lengthy drive.
Wilderness
Camping
The number of visitors admitted to the Wilderness is
limited. On some summer weekends, popular Wilderness camps fill to capacity well in
advance. Wilderness campsites are accessible by foot and horseback only, and
require a wilderness permit which can be reserved
up to three months in advance from the Mill Creek
Ranger Station. Permits are
issued by mail or in person only. Please see Trails of the
Wilderness for additional Wilderness trails and camp information.
