SGWA Receives Forest Service Award

Eight individuals and one group were recognized for their excellent work in carrying out Forest Service wilderness stewardship activities on October 7, 2009 during the agency’s forum for its National Wilderness awards.

The awards recognize the contributions and accomplishments of these individuals in the fields of education, research and leadership in the use of traditional skills and minimum tools related to these wilderness areas.

The agency is half way through its 10–year Wilderness Stewardship Challenge which culminates in 2014 and seeks to bring all of its wilderness areas to an agency developed standard for managing and maintaining wilderness areas. Several of the awards specifically address these efforts.

The agency’s 2009 National Wilderness awards and recipients include:

The Aldo Leopold Award for Overall Wilderness Stewardship Program (External)

The San Gorgonio Wilderness Association (SGWA) working with the San Bernardino National Forest (Calif.) partnered with the Forest Service to recruit, train, administer, and support volunteers. In the last year (check this), SGWA volunteers restored over 100 abandoned fire ring sites to natural conditions, presented nearly two dozen nature talks, staged a free forest festival, and provided trail maintenance in and around the San Gorgonio Wilderness. The SGWA has been actively helping the Forest for more than 25 years.
